“A Greedy Child of Nature: The Sneaky Squirrel”
Squirrel, squirrel, in the tree;
Are you waiting for food from me?
I have some scraps of bread;
They are hard as bricks and feel like lead.
I’ll toss them out on the table they’ll be;
I know you can see them from your tree.
I know you’ve seen me toss something out;
You must be the leader or the scout.
A little while later, I see you come down from the tree;
Seeing what food I put out for the birds and thee.
You found a loaf with rosemary’s scent;
Took one small bite, then off you went.
With a half loaf clutched tight in your jaw,
You’re a sneaky squirrel within nature’s comic law.
You confiscate the goodies that I set out;
Save some for other critters running about.
You’re getting too fat; this I can see;
And it’s because of little old me.
Or would you rather be a big shrew?
A piggy squirrel with no food for the crew?
Don’t be a piggy, please; learn to share;
Why, because of this human, she really does care.
