Why Originality Matters in Writing

Illustration of a young person with curly brown hair, wearing a blue shirt, seated at a wooden table and writing with a quill pen. An ink bottle rests beside the paper. In the warm-toned background, three faded, ghost-like figures — a woman and two men — observe quietly, symbolizing influence, memory, or judgment. The scene evokes themes of creativity, introspection, and literary legacy.

“The Integrity of a Writer”

When we read a book and the story is through;

Don’t take it as yours; you certainly know who.

I have read many stories that are not my own;

As a queen who’s written and becoming known.

Some want to be a writer, but surely can’t write;

Yet taking someone else’s words~ this is not right.

I have read many books with pure delight at hand;

It makes me an author who writes with love so grand.

As many long hours I spend go into a book;

Just look inside its pages; inspect it; take a hard look.

As authors, we make a living off our sales

Copying can sometimes, if convicted, land you in jail.

I love to write my very own words; this is true;

I hate it when someone takes them; it makes me blue.

Forgive me if this somehow sounds like you,

I’m being honest ~ and I hope you are too.
