Exploring the Meaning of ‘Was’ in Poetry

“The Meaning of Was”

As the world turns,

the mind churns—

ideas of many,

ways to trim a penny.

A life worth living

is a life worth giving,

like a tree lying helpless

or a pocketbook left penniless.

Dual purposes in everything,

sharp and sudden as a bee’s sting.

Never ending, always connecting,

never perfect, yet still reflecting.

As the world turns,

great minds churn—

so much worth living,

better to be forgiving.

Does penny‑less mean nonetheless?

Or is it another word for less stress.

Heaven forbid if it does.

For I only may see the meaning of was.
