(A heartfelt, lightly humorous poem about spending a lonely birthday with a loyal dog, a bowl of stew, and a hopeful wish for companionship.)
“Me and My Dog: Alone Once More”
It’s another day, supper is cooking the timer’s set,
I remember feeding my dog, this time I did not forget.
No one is home here but my dog and me.
It’s my thirtieth birthday. Alone again, you see…
We will survive, as we had years before.
I can’t forget to feed my cat; she’s waiting at the door.
Come here my little soft furry friends. Your owner loves you.
I’m feeling depressed today, and sadly blue.
For it is my birthday with no party, presents, or cheer.
If it wasn’t for you, pets and this bottle of Brandy, here.
It wouldn’t be a birthday without a hearty shot or two.
Then to eat my home-made stew. Hoping it doesn’t taste like glue.
I’ll eat a bowl and give my dog a bowl too.
There’s enough here in my bowl for us two.
Then to the dishwasher all dishes will go,
To wash, and sanitized so no one will know…
That you and I shared the same bowls.
Filling our tummies was my birthday goal.
Then off to the living room recliner I will go,
Dog you lay beside me all relaxed like so.
We will spend my birthday alone once again,
Just as it was years before, back when.
I need to find another companion mate,
Someone to cuddle with would be great!
Someone I can hold really close to me,
Someone who will let me be me.
I need to find someone who loves dogs too.
As I do not want my dog to feel blue.
With a little luck someone will come along.
And will put our lonely hearts to song.
For God intended for man, to have a mate.
I’ll ask Santa this year to bring me a date!
