Roy the Shy Boy: A Tale of Friendship and Fun

Young boy in striped shirt and shorts standing alone near playground entrance

“Roy the Shy Little Boy”

Come take my hand, Roy, I’ll guide you this way;

Come, take my hand; we’ll go outside and play.

School is over; fun time begins;

Playing outside is not a sin.

God has granted us time to play;

It’s beautiful out, may I say.

Come take my hand, Roy, I’ll guide you this way;

Come outside and let’s play.

I’ll push you on the swing,

I’ll teeter-totter on that thing.

I’ll slide down the slide with you,

Come on now, what would you like to do?

There’s hopscotch on the sidewalk over there;

We can hop on it if you care.

Come take my hand, I’ll guide you this way;

Come, no need to be afraid, to come and play.

The sandbox is a neat and interesting thing;

We can build almost anything.

Come, my friends, come meet a new boy;

I’ll introduce you to my friend, Roy.

Roy is shy, he has a hard time getting along;

Come, make him feel welcome, come join me in a song.

Welcome Roy, welcome Roy;

Won’t you please come and play?

We’re your friends, Tim, Allen, and Sue;

Come on, Roy, we want to play with you.

Come on, Roy, come take my hand!

We’ll show you a great time in the sand.

Will build a castle, wide and tall,

Come have fun, we’ll have a ball.

Sue brings the shovel; Tim gets the pail.

Allen brings the water; now we’re ready to set sail.

One bucket at a time, the castle will be built;

So, what if it stands with a slight tilt.

What matters is that we all did it together, like friends should.

Come on, Roy, please, we need your help if you could.

Come on, Roy, come on, let’s play;

Please, today, we’ll help guide you all the way.

School is over; now our fun time has begun;

Playing outside is always fun!
