From Graduation to Independence: A Parent’s Perspective on Growing Up

Group of graduates throwing caps in air outdoors at sunset

“New Beginnings: Young and Old”

Parties are here and parties are there;

There are parties just about everywhere.

What’s so special about these, you ask?

It’s graduation time… what an enormous task!

~

Mom and Dad’s so proud of their kids

Growing up and now out of their bibs

Where did those younger years go?

Too fast for some parents, you know.

~

From kindergarten to senior year,

Every moment treasured, every memory dear.

Not without struggles, the kids will say,

But look forward to that special graduation day.

~

No more teachers, no more school; summer is here.

Some will have turned eighteen; wanting to try beer.

Now the enormous task is for them to find a job for money

Isn’t that quite ridiculous, honey?

~

Realization hits kids hard, with no games to play

Your kids are grown; now it’s their turn to pay.

They need to work to live on their own;

Can’t always rely on Mom and Dad for a loan.

~

As one day, loving parents will be gone,

And grown kids must learn where they belong.

Responsibilities aren’t always free;

Now you’ll see the results of your teaching, finally.
