The Blessing I Didn’t Expect: Blessings in Small Change

Homeless man sitting cross‑legged on a city sidewalk, hands clasped in prayer, surrounded by coins and a cardboard sign reading ‘Homeless Please Help.

“The Blessing I Didn’t Expect”

~

I’m looking for money, yet none on the ground.

Searching and searching, only one penny, found.

“What can I do with a penny?” I say to myself;

It’s more than I had; it’s my only wealth.

~

But, that’s not true, someone once said,

As I remember, as I lay on my bed.

There is a man who lives upstairs

He owns nothing, but he surely cares.

~

I’ll ask him tonight to send me a dime.

With my only penny, they’ll make a great chime.

With a clink here and one there;

I’ll have a little more wealth for my underwear.

~

Will he grant my prayer? I’ll need to wait and see;

Have patience, grumbly stomach; I did not forget thee;

Tomorrow will come, and just maybe,

The dime will appear and surprise you and me.

~

Tomorrow’s here, and what do we see?

Five dimes, oh boy! Enough for a hot cup of tea.

Thank you, Lord, the man upstairs;

I’ll keep looking for some new underwear.
